Spaceship Crashes our Ceiling

Over a period of about a year, I slowly worked on sculpting this ceiling light fixture. When I was practicing architecture, I remember someone lamenting that all ceiling mounted light fixtures were hideous. They would only ever use pendants, sconces, recessed cans, cove lighting, and track lighting. I thought that it was strange, so I started looking online for ceiling mounted fixtures, and it was true. There really isn't much variety. I thought that it must not be too hard to make something interesting for the ceiling. However, I learned that it is rather difficult to get good lighting and an interesting art piece as well.

For this fixture, I used metal straps, a hubcap, lights taken from an old lamp and another light fixture, and red plexiglass. The original design sketches (not sure where they are now) had the glass as a circle, but it kept breaking while I was cutting it with my jigsaw. I got a lot of very different reactions to it. Eventually, we took it down when we moved out of our little house.
